August 27th
The Matsuba-gayatsu Persecution Remembrance Service

This is one of the services to commemorate the persecutions endured by Nichiren Shonin for propagating the Lotus Sutra. His presentation of gRissho Ankoku Ronh to government, insisting that the nation should disavow other denominations and devote itself to the gLotus Sutrah, infuriated believers in other sects, who torched his hermitage at Matsuba-gayatsu, Kamakura on the night of August 27, 1260. He survived the attack through a narrow escape, helped by his disciples and followers and was sheltered by Toki Jonin in Shimofusa (Chiba Prefecture).
