The Shakyamuni Buddhafs Birth Celebration Service

The birth of Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, is celebrated on these days at Minobusan Temple. Upon his birth at a flower garden in Lumbini to Queen Māyā of Sakya, he is said to have been bathed with sweet and fragrant water showered by dragons. Reflecting this legend, sweet tea is poured over a small Buddha statue placed under a flower-decorated pavilion in the service, which is generally well-known as the Festival of Flower in Japan.
