January 13th
The New Year Greetings Ceremony

This ceremony originates from a historical event, in which Sanenaga of Hakii or the local governor, who had donated the land for Minobusan Temple the previous year, brought his family to visit his teacher Nichiren Shonin for a new yearfs greeting. After Nichiren passed away, his monthly memorial day (13th) was chosen to hold the ceremony in a manner as if he were still alive in this world. The Horse Towing Ceremony using two horses is performed after the service, in remembrance of the Shonin, who loved horses.
